Description

Jules Hermann was a Creole politician with a curious mind, open to original ideas. In his major work, Revelations of the Great Ocean, which first appeared posthumously in 1927, he develops the hypothesis of the lost ancient continent of Lemuria - never named in the book - which would be the cradle of every civilization, and of which Madagascar and the Mascarenes were believed to be the last traces. It was said to be a vast continent "in the form of a crescent, stretching from the Indian Ocean to Patagonia, beginning south of Ceylon, incorporating the Mascarenes and Madagascar, passing beyond the Cape of Good Hope [...]". Jules Hermann followed the traces of this ancient civilization to the mountain of Bourbon Island (now Reunion Island), where he saw faces, figures, animals, zodiac images, etc.: all signs that the ancient peoples had formed the landscape of the island. In Les Hauts in Reunion he also saw traces left by prodigious giant sculptures; in Malagasy he recognised the origins of all languages. He tried to prove through linguistic, philological, archaeological and anthropological researches that there was originally a single race with a single language. If you are intrigued by the mysteries of lost continents and the origins of language, you will appreciate Revelations of the Great Ocean.
