Les mystères d’Egypte

How can we explain oracles? Which path leads to happiness? How are we to distinguish the different categories of gods? What are demons? What do Egyptian priests teach on these matters, termed occult in everyday parlance? These are the questions examined by Iamblichus, under the name “Master Abammon”, in this treatise which is also a response to the Neoplatonic philosopher Porphyry. The work is divided into ten books which in turn address divine apparitions, divination, prayer, sacrifice, the theology of the Egyptians, the personal demon, happiness and the end of man. Since the Renaissance, this text has profoundly influenced Neoplatonic spiritual tradition and western esotericism, as well as Masonic symbolism. Many have found a revelation within it, usually concealed from man.
