Sheikh Muslih al-Dīn Saadi Shīrāzī[ was one of the most famous and highly respected Sufi masters of a flourishing 13th Century Baghdad. His teachings, the product of the purest tradition and enriched with benefit of extensive travel (from China to Morocco, from Turkey to Abyssinia), remain one of the jewels of Medieval Persian mysticism. The Gulistan, or The Rose Garden, is his landmark work. This philosophical collection of verse and poetic prose, written in a style which is at times lyrical, tender and even humorous, introduces the reader to a finer perception of reality. Behind the apparent sensuality of the form and above and beyond allegory, the profound nature of every being and every thing unveils itself, knowledge of which is the very essence of spiritual awakening.
