Description
The Gospel of Philip is one of the apocryphal Coptic texts discovered after 1945, in the caves of Nag-Hammadi in Upper Egypt. This Gnostic gospel from the second century AD, used as a catechism by initiates, offers original testimony of the life and teachings of Christ in his times. Attributed to one of the closest disciples to Jesus, it enables us to discover a more human figure, one given to expressing himself very freely and with a liberal attitude to the men and women around him. The character of Mary Magdalene, the Master’s “companion”, takes on a singular importance, and an emphasis is placed on the initiatory bond between masculine and feminine principles, the image of a return to original Unity.
