Description

The astrophysicist Trinh Xuan Thuan explains how our vision of the universe, and our relationship with it, have changed over the centuries. Until the Renaissance, the Earth was at the heart of everything. Since then, scientific discoveries have served to continually diminish man's place in the cosmos, but also to show that his arrival owes nothing to chance, and that from the moment of its birth the universe contained a nascent form not only of Life, but also consciousness. We are also introduced to eight other figures, including Jean d'Ormesson, Matthieu Ricard, Jean-Marie Pelt, Edgar Morin to name but a few, who share with us their feelings and reflections inspired by the infinite. Some evoke the lessons of wisdom that we can draw from the harmonious functioning of the universe, such as interdependence, altruism, cooperation... Others tell of how the universe can act upon our relationship with time and artistic creation. This book also contains 40 illustrations and photos, some of which were taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
