A mediator between gods and mortals, it is venerated in a number of traditions. It in turn symbolises passion or anger, courage or fury. A means of purification and regeneration in the laboratory of the alchemists and the heart of the mystics, it is also a means of destruction wielded by man at his most bellicose.
