These are two fundamental texts by Plato, portraying the judgement and the condemnation of Socrates.
The first, “The Apology of Socrates”, relates the trial that was held to determine his impiety and his harmful influence on the young of Athens. During the trial, the Greek philosopher defends his conduct. His wisdom, he tells us, stems from the awareness of his ignorance; his role is to awaken the consciences that lie dormant in their certainties.
In the second text, “Crito”, Socrates, while patiently awaiting execution, speaks with his friend Crito, who suggests he escapes. Plato, by portraying Socrates as the ideal philosopher and wise man, raises him to the rank of founding myth of the Western philosophical tradition.
These two texts are preceded by a long introduction that puts them in context. How was justice done in Athens? What great trials connected with religion had taken place before that of Socrates? How did Socrates envisage piety and education, he who was accused of corrupting the young and not believing in the gods of the city?
This book also provides many tools for furthering your knowledge of the texts: a detailed plan of each work, notes, maps, a chronology, a thematic index and an index of proper nouns, as well as a rich bibliography.
