Description

Marie-Louise von Franz, who worked alongside Jung for thirty years, examines a 16th century alchemical treaty, written by Gerhard Dorn, doctor and disciple of Paracelsus.  In a brief history of alchemy viewed from a psychological angle, she recalls that, for this art, psychism and matter were as one.  Its adepts worked equally on their dreams and archetypical images that came to them when they attempted to pierce the mysteries of creation.  Gerhard Dorn also believed that alchemy should bring together work on matter and work of oneself. Only a person who transformed himself by meditation could transform matter.  Dorn spontaneously carried out active imagination.  In his alchemical treaty, he gives an imaged account which Marie-Louise von Franz translated by drawing parallels with concepts such as subconsciousness, Self, individuation and synchronicity, etc.
