This superb book recounts the history of Medieval medicine and pharmacopoeia, and contains many illustrations taken from a 15th century Italian manuscript : the Tractatus de Herbis is an extensive collection of sumptuous plant illustrations and refined illuminations.
Medieval remedies mostly contain medicinal plants, or “simples”: as is shown in many of the ancient recipes appearing in this book. All the monasteries had a medicinal plant garden and produced their own remedies, which helped to advance pharmaceutical knowledge thanks to people like Hildegarde de Bingen and Ison de Saint-Gall.
The superbly bound book is printed on paper resembling imitation parchment and has a gold edge; Its richly illustrated pages take the reader into the world of plants with medicinal as well as symbolic and poetic qualities.
