Your relationship with me is no different to your other relationships. Each of them begins with a conversation. If that goes well, a friendship is formed. And if that also goes well, you feel a sense of Unity - of communion - with the other person. It happens exactly the same way with me. We start with a conversation. Each of you view these conversations with God in your own way - depending on differing perspectives and at different moments. It is always a question of a two-way dialogue, like the one we’re having now. This can be a conversation “in your head”, or on paper, or my responses can take some time to arrive or may reach you in the form of the next song you hear, the next film you see, the next conference you attend, the next magazine article that you read or in the unexpected comments of a friend who you just happen to bump into “by chance”. Once you realise that we are always in conversation, we can move on to our friendship. It is certain that we will reach communion...
