A superb overview of Southern Indian musical traditions .
This set of 3 CDs is a remarkable testimony to the traditional music of Southern India.
The first CD, recorded in the oldest concert hall in Cochin, presents Kathakali singing, a form of theatre that combines drama, music and dance, in which different deities appear in episodes from the Mahabharata. It continues with different vina excerpts, a kind of lute and the oldest classical instrument in Indian music.
The second CD was recorded in Tanjore, the birthplace of Carnatic music, with one of the masters of the vina, accompanied by a tabla virtuoso.
The final CD is a recording of three musicians from the Rameswaram Temple playing the thavil, an ancient percussion instrument, and long nadaswaram trumpets, followed by a group playing chenda drums and bronze chengila gongs
